Massage therapy is one of the many treatment options we offer at Moving Forward Physical Therapy. Massage therapy comes in different styles and can provide both physical and mental benefits. Typically, massage therapy is done by rubbing and pressing your muscles, skin, tendons, and ligaments at different pressures. Some different styles of massage therapy include:
- Swedish Massages – Gentle massages that promote relaxation
- Sports Massages – Aimed towards sports injuries or relief for athletes
- Deep Massages – Used to help muscle damage
- Shiatsu Massages – Focuses on acupressure points

Massage therapy can be great when incorporated into an already existing treatment plan for whatever health concern you are trying to address. Massages promote relaxation while reducing tension, soreness, pain, it can even help improve immunity. Massage therapy can also help conditions such as:
- Depression and anxiety
- Nerve Pain
- Sports-related injuries
- Neck Pain
- Insomnia and sleep issues
- Back pain
- Muscle Pain
- Soft tissue injuries
Although massage therapy may help with these conditions, massages are also great for enjoyment and relaxation. Massages can help boost mood, and even give you more energy!
Is massage therapy right for me?
Getting a massage shouldn’t be painful, but it is normal to experience some soreness the next day after a massage. Also, massages aren’t always safe for everyone. If you have burns/infections/broken bones/wounds, have deep vein thrombosis, have a low platelet count, have severe osteoporosis, have a bleeding disorder, or take blood-thinning medication, massage therapy is not appropriate for you. Make sure to talk to a professional to see if massage therapy is right for you, especially if you are pregnant or have cancer.
