Our Lead Sports Medicine Physical Therapist – Dr. Vitaly Dvoskin

Dr. Vitaly - Sports Medicine Physical Therapist

Dr. Vitaly Dvoskin is a licensed physical therapist in New York, New Jersey, and California. He received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University and completed his Baccalaureate Degree in Health and Exercise Science with a Minor in Coaching at Syracuse University. He is the owner of Moving Forward Physical Therapy, The Moving Forward Company, and ReVitalyze in NYC.

Dr. Vitaly’s concentration is within orthopedic and sports medicine, with an emphasis on corrective movement with neural re-education and manual therapy. His post-doctorate work has been in advanced manual and orthopedic medicine, as taught by the renowned Institute of Physical Arts, Gibbons & Tehan, Maitland-Australian Approach, Great Lake Seminars, The McKenzie Institute, Integrative Manual Therapy Solutions and The Harkness Center For Dance at NYU.

The human body’s ability to transform and adapt at different stages of our lives – is the driving factor behind Dr. Vitaly’s passion for promoting rehabilitation. He is a strong advocate of postural and body mechanic reeducation and training, using those gains to enhance overall movement, performance, and quality of living. Keen awareness of the human body, over 14 years of experience in the field, has allowed him to understand and manage chronic pain, lower back, and sacral-pelvic dysfunction, shoulder pathologies and impairments of the lower extremities to name a few.

Constantly at the forefront of research and continuing education, Dr. Vitaly is always striving for excellence in the way he does his work. Most recently, he was the Company Physical Therapist for Dear Evan Hansen, helping transition the show into the Music Box Theater; the famous Avenue QOnce On This IslandTrip Of LoveGodspellBeautiful: The Carol King MusicalSTOMP (off-Broadway) and Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. He’s also worked with dancers from the American Ballet Theater, New York Ballet Company, world champion Salsa, Jazz, and modern dancers.

Additionally, Dr. Vitaly has been working with the High School Division of Grace Church School and Dwight International School: overseeing games, coordinating with the athletic department on safety and injury prevention for the student body. As well as club soccer team Beyond Soccer NYC.

When he’s not busy working, Dr. Vitaly enjoys taking advantage of this amazing planet. Having recently trekked Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route in five days, Torres Del Paine and Mount Fitz Roy in Patagonia, The Haute Route Swiss Alps for 13 days, the Alta Via 1 Route in the Italian Dolomites for 10 days (six months post ACL reconstruction), Zion and Moab National Parks in Utah, Yosemite National Park in California and many more local and foreign mountain ranges.

Having started his life as a patient, Dr. Vitaly is not one to shy away from adversity. At the age of four, a hot iron burned his entire left hand, requiring intensive mobility work to assure maximum dexterity of the muscles and skin stayed in tacked. At the age of 14, while riding his bike home, he was struck by a car and fractured two lumbar vertebrae as well as tearing the labrum in his shoulder and hip. This injury, but more importantly the subpar rehab that followed, was the turning point in sending Dr. Vitaly into the rehab world. Most recently, while navigating his bike through the busy streets of Manhattan, an uneven pothole through his bike off-kilter and tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Medial Meniscus. All these cumulative moments of growth have shaped the empathetic and strong-willed personality that shapes the progress of even the most challenging of patients forward!

Why Should I Consider Sports Medicine Physical Therapy in NYC?

Sports Medicine Physical Therapy NYC

The unfortunate truth about injuries is that they can occur arbitrarily. At one point or another, certain injuries will not be able to be avoided, especially if you’re an athlete or someone who participates in regular exercise. When this happens to you, you’ll need a team of experts in your corner to help you make a full recovery. At Moving Forward Physical Therapy, our staff is comprised of the physical therapists you need in order to accomplish this goal. After sustaining an injury, our physical therapy practices can be used to help you make a full recovery and get you back to being pain-free.

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a non-invasive, activity-based form of treatment that promotes healing from within an injured area. During a session of physical therapy, our specialists will teach patients a variety of stretches and exercises designed to have a therapeutic effect on the body. In addition to physical activity, our sessions of physical therapy also include the use of various manual therapy techniques to help with achieving the below:

  • Increasing strength.
  • Improved flexibility and range of motion.
  • Reduction of pain, swelling, and inflammation.
  • Avoid the recurrence of an injury.

Injuries Treated During Physical Therapy

At Moving Forward Physical Therapy, our team is committed to helping patients overcome their ailments. But what types of injuries and conditions can physical therapy be used to treat? One of the main benefits of physical therapy is the answer to this question, as this form of treatment can be used on a wide range of ailments. If you’ve been unfortunate enough to suffer from any of the below, our team will be able to provide treatment:

  • Muscle strains and tears.
  • Bone breaks and fractures.
  • ACL, MCL, and other ligamentous issues.
  • Neck and back pain.
  • Spinal stenosis.
  • Arthritis.
  • Sports injuries.
  • Balance and gait issues
  • And more!

Additional Benefits Of Physical Therapy

As we’ve previously stated, the number of injuries and conditions physical therapy can be used to help treat and manage is one of the most important aspects of the practice. However, there are plenty of other benefits to be incorporated. By coming in for a session of physical therapy, the benefits you’ll be able to receive may include the following:

  • Avoiding the need for complication filled treatments such as surgery.
  • Manage pain without the need for pain medication.
  • Assisting in fall prevention.
  • Fight against general health issues.
  • Maximize your ability for movement.
  • Many of the therapeutic exercises you are taught can also be performed in the comfort of your own home.

What To Expect From Physical Therapy Sessions

If you’ve never received physical therapy as a form of treatment before, it’s understandable to be uninformed on the practice at the time of your first appointment. To help inform you, our team wants to let you know what to expect to take place. During your first session, our physical therapists will make an in-depth evaluation of your current functionality levels. Once this is done, they will then craft the treatment regimen that meets all of your specific needs. You’ll be moving around a lot during each session, so consider wearing comfortable clothes like shorts, sweatshirts, and sneakers.

Need To Improve Athletic Performance?

Consider Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Sports Med NYC

If you have been going to the gym and have noticed people having a band or some type of tourniquet around their upper arm or upper leg right below, you might have seen someone practicing the new trend of Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy. It is a new type of training technique that is highly effective in growing muscles but using lighter weights than usual. Even though it seems like an attractive technique for growing and building muscle, it may not be everyone. If you want to learn more about blood flow restriction therapy and sports medicine physical therapy in NYC or are looking for someone who specializes in offering BFR therapy, contact Moving Forward Physical Therapy or visit our website.

What is Blood Flow Restriction Therapy?

Blood flow restriction therapy involves restricting the blood flow of certain limbs to help build muscles. Blood can be restricted by either tying a tight tourniquet with any type of material or if you are practicing this technique at a physical therapy location they might use a device, similar to measuring blood pressure, which can measure and control how much pressure you use.

The main reason that this is done is that in traditional muscle training you have to lift around 60-70% of your one-rep max (1rm) to build muscles, but with some type of blood flow restriction, you can see the same effects of traditional strength training while using lightweight. The restriction mimics the heavy load by decreasing the blood flow and oxygen the muscle receives and allows for the use of lighter weight. To see the results of blood flow restriction therapy you would have to use around 10-30% of 1rm while using the tourniquet. This is how BFR therapy works and can grow your muscles.

Benefits of Blood Flow Restriction Therapy

Due to how many people have researched and studied this method of training, researchers have been able to determine the benefits of blood flow restriction training. They have also been able to determine who should and should not use blood flow restriction therapy. Here are some of the benefits of BFR:

  • It makes healthy people stronger- people who have not suffered from injuries, are still able to take advantage of BLR. Some things that people may see are increased muscle size, strength, and endurance that are similar to lifting heavy loads.
  • It makes injured people stronger- Many researchers have been doing experiments to see if BFR can provide people who are rehabbing an injury with benefits. A few studies have shown that it does make people with injuries able to recover stronger. Also, it can help elderly people stay in shape because they can lift lighter weights.
  • You can do almost any exercise with BFR- because it is easy to make and tie a tourniquet around your muscles you can do most exercises. It would be difficult to do the larger muscle groups like the chest and back muscles.
  • Workout sessions are short- Depending on the circumstances of the person using blood flow restriction therapy, their sessions might be quick. If the person is rehabbing an injury they might only be at their session for 25-30 minutes according to some physical therapist.
  • Anti-aging- the BFR training session releases hormones that produce more lean muscles. Even though only certain muscle groups might be restricted the hormones released to go into the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. Using lighter weights will put less wear-and-tear on your body. Lifting the heavier loads can seriously affect your joints later in life, and as a result arthritis and joint disorders can develop.
